The race started real late so most of us had re-frozen since our warm-ups. The start of the race featured one guy running off the front to get warmed up. Headed down the hill I passed him and realized nobody came with me so with good gap I took off on a really early flyer. The gap got up to about 40 seconds. It had to have softened up the legs of a few people as the I kept the pace quite high. I could look back and see DarkHorse driving the chase. After completing the first lap with the field finally closing in at the end of the gradual climb I sat up and let them catch me. The rest of the race was pretty dull, except for 1 Saturn rider doing some cyclocross action after overcooking a turn, as the pace noticably dropped from my first lap. There was 1 attempted break about 1/4 of the way through the last lap but I didn't let him get away.

On the 2nd to last road DarkHorse again went to the front and started the pace making. They came off on the final road as a BreakAway rider went to the front with me right on his wheel. Appraching the S turns in the last mile or so an Ipro rider came up my left so I slid over behind him as the BreakAway rider was cooked. I started my sprint from behind him at about 225m to go. Cliff (right behind me in the GC) was coming up hard on my left and got a wheel on me. I kicked it into the 11 and drew even, then threw the bike across the line for the win.

As a side note, according to Allen my race featured the most exciting finish. He said not only was it the fastest finish but you could hear the sound of my wheels long before crossing the line.

Another spring weekend another OVR race. Took it easy due to planning on Wilkesville the next day. Not much happened, rather dull training ride, with a few attack sprints thrown in for fun. Flat course, just lots of wind.

In a word, disappointing. It was a field of 15 women, and the first 2 laps were a lot of slow riding, a few nice attacks and chases, and more slow riding. My goals were to sit in the upper third of the field, watch what was happening, respond to attacks, and see what kind of sprint I had at the finish. Rarely was I in the upper third, but I’m getting better. I helped shut down one attack that had promise by Mary Downing and two other riders late in the second lap. Unfortunately, early in lap 3 my front flatted, loud enough for everyone to hear. Fortunately, it was on a straight, and the field had no problem getting around me as I slowed. I hated the mile and a half I hoofed it (and yes, you CAN destroy kangaroo hide, say by walking your shoes through rough stone) before a good Samaritan (also named Sherry) and her two kids gave me a lift back to the school.

Post op showed the tube blew out a side seam. Jim helped air it up pre-race. I suspect it is not his wheels that need to be exorcised, but his pump!

I owe Andys thanks for trying to get a tube and cartridge to me in the middle of his race—he threw, I heard something hit pavement, but I couldn’t see where they landed in the ditch. Grass was high, and there was standing water. Andys, promise, I’ll pay you back. Thanks to Jim for the loan of a pair of medium weight gloves and ear warmers, and thanks to Katherine and Christian for driving me back to the finish line.
